Wave-Wing Elemental

Wave-Wing Elemental was released in 2015 as part of the Battle for Zendikar set for Magic: The Gathering. This set returned players to the plane of Zendikar, a world defined by its volatile landscapes and the ongoing struggle against the reality-warping Eldrazi titans. The card was designed as a common-rarity creature to provide players with a reliable flying threat during the limited gameplay format, reflecting the desperate survival tactics of the Zendikari forces.

The card features artwork by Johannes Voss, a prolific contributor to the game's aesthetic identity. Voss sought to capture the elemental nature of the creature by integrating the windswept, jagged aesthetic synonymous with the Zendikar plane. Upon its release, it was noted for its utility in draft and sealed environments, where its ability to trigger Landfall—the set’s signature mechanic—rewarded players for thoughtful resource management.
