Where it came from
Wavebreak Hippocamp was introduced in the Foundations Jumpstart set, a product line designed to bridge the gap between new player onboarding and established play styles. As a member of the blue card color identity, the creature reflects the thematic focus of the set on accessible yet mechanically distinct aquatic archetypes, serving as a tactical piece that rewards players for interacting with their opponents during off-turn sequences.
The card features an illustrative style consistent with the modern aesthetic of the Foundations release, which emphasizes clarity and environmental storytelling. The design centers on the mythological hippocamp, blending equine and piscine features to evoke the fluid, reactive nature of blue-aligned play. Within the broader Jumpstart environment, it was developed to provide a reliable engine for decks built around low-cost spells and tempo-oriented play.
