Where it came from
Wavebreak Hippocamp was released in early 2020 as part of the Theros Beyond Death expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to embody the mythological aesthetic of Theros, a plane heavily inspired by Greek antiquity. As a creature type, the Hippocamp represents the classic sea-horse hybrid found in Hellenistic art, serving as a tactical blue-aligned creature that rewards players for casting spells during an opponent's turn.
The illustration was crafted by artist Bastien L. Deharme, who utilized a moody, ethereal color palette to emphasize the creature's connection to the mystical oceans of the Therosian setting. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche but effective utility engine in constructed formats, particularly appreciated by players who favor reactive, control-oriented gameplay styles that mirror the patient, shifting nature of the sea.
