Weapon Surge

Weapon Surge was released in 2013 as part of the Dragon's Maze expansion, the final set in the Return to Ravnica block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set concluded the storyline of the guild-based plane of Ravnica, where the ten guilds were forced to navigate a secret labyrinth beneath the city. Mechanically, the card reflects the red color identity’s focus on aggressive combat maneuvers and temporary power boosts.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Mathias Kollros, who has contributed art to numerous sets in the game. His design aims to depict the frantic, chaotic energy of the red mana alignment, visually representing the card’s effect of granting first strike and power to a creature. Upon release, it was regarded as a standard utility spell intended primarily for Limited environments, where its ability to swing the tide of combat in draft or sealed play provided necessary tactical flexibility.
