Where it came from
Advent of the Wurm was released in May 2013 as part of the Dragon's Maze expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a centerpiece of the Selesnya Conclave’s mechanical identity in the Return to Ravnica block, the card was designed to embody the guild's focus on creature tokens and aggressive board presence, functioning as a high-impact instant that could create a formidable 5/5 wurm token at the end of an opponent's turn.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Greg Staples, who utilized a vivid, earthy palette to emphasize the naturalistic, forest-dwelling aesthetic of the Selesnya guild. The illustration is noted for its dynamic perspective, capturing the sudden emergence of the wurm from the undergrowth. Upon release, it was well-received by players for its efficiency and ability to punish opponents who tapped out, becoming a staple of the Standard format throughout its tenure.
