Weather the Storm

Weather the Storm was released in 2019 as part of the Modern Horizons set, the first Magic: The Gathering product designed specifically to introduce new cards directly into the Modern format. The set focused on complex mechanics and nostalgia, featuring a cycle of 'Timeshifted' cards that paid homage to the history of the game. Weather the Storm was designed as a potent defensive tool for spell-based combo decks, allowing players to gain life proportional to the number of spells cast that turn.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Livia Prima, who rendered the turbulent, high-fantasy scene with a sense of immense atmospheric pressure. The design reflects the 'Storm' mechanic—a storied and controversial ability in Magic history—by rewarding players for stringing together multiple low-cost spells. Upon its release, the card was widely received as a staple for sideboard strategies, particularly in decks like Storm or Burn, where it serves as a critical countermeasure against aggressive strategies.
