Weathered Sentinels

Weathered Sentinels was released in 2022 as part of the New Capenna Commander set, a collection of supplemental decks designed to accompany the Streets of New Capenna expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card draws inspiration from the art deco and noir-inspired aesthetic of the set, which depicts a metropolis built by angels and run by powerful crime syndicates. As a mechanical representative of the city's stoic architecture, it functions as a defensive tool meant to deter attackers in multiplayer formats.

The artwork was created by illustrator Zezhou Chen, who focused on capturing the imposing, industrial art deco style central to the plane of New Capenna. The design reflects the game's broader thematic pivot toward a 1920s-inspired urban landscape, utilizing ornate stone textures and mechanical motifs to emphasize the card's role as a silent, unmoving guardian. It received moderate attention upon release for its utility in controlling board states, fitting well into the strategy of Commander decks that favor reactive, defensive gameplay.
