Where it came from
Weigh Down was released in 2021 as part of the Kaldheim expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set in a plane inspired by Norse mythology, the card was designed to represent the heavy, encroaching corruption of the icy realm. It functions mechanically as a removal spell, fitting the set's thematic focus on grim, combat-oriented survival and the harshness of winter environments.
The card features illustration by Wisnu Tan, who crafted a scene that captures the oppressive nature of the magic involved. In the broader context of the set, the art style prioritizes the stark, high-contrast aesthetics associated with Kaldheim's frozen landscapes. Upon its release, it was utilized primarily in Limited formats, where its ability to scale based on the number of snow permanents made it a situational but effective tool for players navigating the set's specific mechanics.
