Where it came from
Released in 1999, Wei Ambush Force is part of the Portal Three Kingdoms expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to introduce players to the mechanics of the game using the historical backdrop of the 14th-century Chinese epic Romance of the Three Kingdoms. By focusing on the conflict between the kingdoms of Wei, Shu, and Wu, Wizards of the Coast sought to appeal to a broader Asian market while offering a more streamlined, beginner-friendly gameplay experience.
The card illustration, credited to artist Ian Miller, reflects the distinct aesthetic shift seen in the Portal series, which moved away from the high-fantasy tropes of the core sets toward the stylized, sweeping visual language of Chinese historical warfare. As a member of the Wei faction, the card emphasizes the tactical, combat-oriented nature of the set. While Portal Three Kingdoms was initially criticized by established players for its simplified rules, it has since become a highly sought-after curiosity among collectors due to its limited print run and the cultural significance of its narrative source material.
