Where it came from
Werefox Bodyguard was released as part of the Wilds of Eldraine set in 2023, serving as a spotlight card for the set’s return to a fairy-tale inspired plane. This particular card was designed to highlight the set's focus on creature-based utility, functioning as both a flash threat and a form of temporary creature removal. The mechanics were crafted to lean into the set’s flavor of chivalry and folklore, reflecting a transformation trope common in the high-fantasy aesthetic of the Eldraine world.
The art for this card, rendered by illustrator Bryan Sola, captures the duality of the character’s lycanthropic nature. Sola’s design emphasizes the tension between the stoic, armored guard and the predatory fox form, a common visual motif in the set's character design. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its versatile role in limited gameplay environments, where its ability to interact with the board at instant speed provided significant tactical flexibility.
