Where it came from
Werefox Bodyguard was originally introduced as part of the Wilds of Eldraine expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in September 2023. The card was designed to support the set's fairy-tale aesthetic, which draws heavily from Arthurian legend and classic European folklore. This specific version, identified by collector number 39s, is a promotional variant that features unique borderless art, emphasizing the set's emphasis on high-fantasy illustration and vibrant, whimsical creature design.
The artwork for this card was created to reflect the duality of the character, a core theme within the Eldraine narrative. The design process focused on blending the creature's humanoid form with its lupine traits, resulting in an aesthetic that feels both courtly and feral. Upon release, the set was praised for its cohesive visual identity and the way its mechanical functions, such as the bodyguard's ability to temporarily exile creatures, integrated seamlessly into the thematic backdrop of a mystical, enchanted forest.
