Where it came from
Wheel and Deal was originally released in the 2002 Onslaught expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a blue sorcery, it fits into the game's tradition of 'draw-seven' cards, mechanics designed to refresh players' hands entirely, which often shift the momentum of a game toward a more chaotic or high-stakes state.
The card features an illustration by Pete Venters, a prolific artist known for his significant contributions to the game's early aesthetic. His work here depicts a literal wheel of fortune motif that reflects the card's theme of discarding one's current resources in exchange for a fresh set, a design choice intended to capture the volatile and unpredictable nature of the card's effect.
