Where it came from
Whisper of the Dross was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Phyrexia: All Will Be One. The card serves as a thematic piece within the set's narrative, which depicts the transformation of the plane of Mirrodin into the mechanical nightmare of New Phyrexia. It represents the darker, infectious aesthetic of the Phyrexians, specifically focusing on the oily, corruptive influence of the black-aligned forces seeking to compleat the multiverse.
The card's visual design was rendered by artist Marta Nael, who utilized the set's signature blend of biomechanical horror and sleek, industrial artifice. Nael's work emphasizes the fluid, visceral nature of the glistening oil, a substance central to the Phyrexian lore. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional tool for limited formats, noted by players for its ability to shift the power dynamics of a game through a temporary reduction of a creature's lethality.
