Where it came from
Whispering Wizard was released in late 2021 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Innistrad: Crimson Vow. The set focused on a gothic horror theme, centered around a lavish vampire wedding on the plane of Innistrad. This card, a blue creature, was designed to fit within the set's mechanical themes of spell-casting synergy and token generation, representing the scholarly, slightly ominous influence of human mages living under the shadow of the local vampire aristocracy.
The illustration for the card was provided by artist Igor Kieryluk, who utilized a dark, atmospheric color palette to convey the isolation and magical focus of the character. The design team intended the card to be a functional tool for players focusing on non-creature spell decks, rewarding them with Spirits whenever they cast instants or sorceries. Upon release, it was well-received by players engaged in Limited formats for its ability to generate incremental value over the course of a game.
