Where it came from
Whisper Squad was released in 2020 as part of the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths set for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on a world defined by its massive monsters and the human struggle to coexist with or control them. Mechanically, the card was designed to support the 'human tribal' theme of the set, utilizing a shared ability that allows players to tutor for additional copies of the creature, reflecting the cohesive, tactical nature of a specialized military unit.
The artwork was created by illustrator Matt Stewart, who sought to depict a disciplined group of scouts moving through the dense, vibrant foliage of Ikoria. Stewart’s approach emphasizes the squad's synchronized movement and utilitarian gear, grounding the fantastical setting in a realistic, tactical aesthetic. Upon its release, the card was recognized by players as a functional piece of deck-building utility, specifically noted for its effectiveness in the limited format where consistent access to creature resources is highly valued.
