White Ward

White Ward was released as part of the Limited Edition Alpha set in 1993, representing the inaugural launch of Magic: The Gathering by Wizards of the Coast. Conceived by Richard Garfield, the game was designed to blend the strategic depth of hobby games with the collectible nature of baseball cards, carving out the entirely new category of the trading card game. White Ward, a common enchantment card, was essential to the early meta-game, allowing players to protect their creatures from the color-specific destruction and damage spells that defined the game's initial color pie mechanics.

The artwork for the card was created by artist Quinton Hoover, whose distinct, flowing style became a hallmark of the game's earliest expansions. Hoover’s illustration for White Ward focused on the protective, ethereal quality of white magic, utilizing soft linework and a serene aesthetic that contrasted with the more aggressive imagery found in the black and red portions of the set. As part of the Alpha print run, the card features the characteristic rounded corners and intense color saturation that distinguish these early printings from subsequent iterations.
