Provenance

Where it came from

The Jade Monolith was released in 1993 as part of Limited Edition Alpha, the inaugural set of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was conceptualized by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast during the nascent days of the collectible card game genre. The card was designed to introduce a unique defensive mechanic to the game, allowing players to redirect damage intended for creatures to the artifact itself, reflecting the flavor of an indestructible, stoic sentinel.

The illustrative work for the Jade Monolith was completed by artist Jesper Myrfors, who served as the game's first art director. Myrfors employed a distinct, somewhat surreal aesthetic that characterized much of the early Alpha set. While the card is often cited by players for its unconventional strategic utility, it remains a notable example of the original, hand-painted art style that defined the visual identity of early Magic: The Gathering before the game transitioned to a more standardized digital art production process.
