Wicked Akuba

Wicked Akuba was released in 2004 as part of the Champions of Kamigawa set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed as the first set in a block inspired by Japanese folklore and mythology, the card was designed to support the set's focus on creature-based combat and spirit-themed mechanics. As a common black creature, it was crafted to provide players with a reliable, albeit simple, tool for aggressive deck strategies, reflecting the darker, supernatural aesthetic that defined the block's depiction of the spirit realm.

The card's illustration was provided by Ittoku, an artist whose work throughout the Kamigawa block helped establish the series' signature visual style. The design utilizes a stark, eerie aesthetic to depict the Akuba, a creature rooted in traditional Japanese urban legends of malicious spirits. At the time of its release, the card was primarily utilized by players in limited formats, where its ability to grow in power through mana investment offered a standard tactical option for black-aligned decks.
