Where it came from
Wildgrove Summoner was released as part of the Alchemy: Lorwyn Eclipsed set, a digital-only expansion for Magic: The Gathering Arena. The design philosophy behind this set was to revisit the themes of the original Lorwyn block—specifically the interaction between typal creatures and nature-themed mechanics—while utilizing the unique capabilities of the digital platform to introduce new keywords and card states that would be difficult to replicate in paper play.
The card was designed to support creature-heavy strategies by leveraging the set’s focus on the 'Elf' and 'Treefolk' archetypes. Its visual illustration draws heavily from the pastoral, high-fantasy aesthetic established by Lorwyn’s original art direction, emphasizing the connection between the summoner and the lush, untamed forests of the setting. Like many entries in the Alchemy expansions, it was intended to bridge the gap between traditional set mechanics and the faster, more iterative nature of the digital format.
