What it does
Whenever another Zombie you control dies, if it didn't have decayed, create a 2/2 black Zombie creature token with decayed. (It can't block. When it attacks, sacrifice it at end of combat.)
At the beginning of your end step, you may sacrifice a Zombie. If you do, draw a card.

Where it came from
Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver was introduced as the face commander for the Undead Unleashed deck, released alongside the Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Midnight Hunt in 2021. Designed to serve as a tribal leader for zombie decks, the card was created to emphasize the recursive nature of the undead in the Innistrad plane. Its mechanics allow for consistent board presence by generating decayed zombie tokens whenever another zombie creature a player controls dies.
The character was conceptualized by Wizards of the Coast's creative team to represent a prominent, aristocratic zombie figure within the lore of Innistrad. The card illustration was rendered by artist Bram Sels, who focused on portraying Wilhelt with a mix of regal poise and the grim rot characteristic of his undead status. Upon release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its streamlined ability to facilitate sacrifice engines and tribal synergy.
