What it does
Whenever another Zombie you control dies, if it didn't have decayed, create a 2/2 black Zombie creature token with decayed. (It can't block. When it attacks, sacrifice it at end of combat.)
At the beginning of your end step, you may sacrifice a Zombie. If you do, draw a card.

Where it came from
Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver was introduced as the face commander for the Undead Unleashed deck, released in 2021 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. The card was designed to embody the themes of the set, specifically focusing on the zombie-heavy tribal mechanics prevalent in the gothic horror-inspired plane of Innistrad. As a legendary creature, Wilhelt was created to provide players with a strategic centerpiece for graveyard-centric gameplay, utilizing a sacrifice-and-token-generation loop that rewards players for managing their zombie board state.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured the character’s dual identity as a persistent, relentless undead lord. The visual design emphasizes the tragic vanity and gruesome ambition of the character, depicting him with a mix of regal ornamentation and decayed flesh. Upon its release, the card was well-received within the Commander format for its synergy-driven design, which balanced flavor-heavy mechanics with a playstyle that felt both powerful and thematic for enthusiasts of the tribal archetype.
