Where it came from
Wilson, Refined Grizzly was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed to integrate the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms setting into the game's popular Commander format, this card specifically functions as a legendary creature that can serve as a deck's commander. Its design captures the whimsical yet formidable spirit of a bear who has donned a suit and monocle, reflecting the lighthearted tone often found in D&D adventuring parties.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who aimed to blend the natural ferocity of a grizzly bear with the sophisticated, polite aesthetic of a refined gentleman. The art direction emphasizes the contrast between the creature's massive, wild physiology and its civilized attire, which resonated well with the player base. Upon release, the card became a beloved cult favorite due to its unique mechanics and the humorous, dignified character portrait, frequently appearing in decks built around themes of charm and martial prowess.
