Where it came from
Wind Strider was released in 2017 as part of the Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set introduced a Mesoamerican-inspired plane characterized by exploration, piracy, and dinosaur-heavy ecosystems. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, this card reflects the set's mechanical emphasis on the blue mana color's association with evasion and utility, serving as a functional 'common' rarity creature intended to support the Limited format's drafting environment.
The card features artwork by illustrator Anna Steinbauer, who was tasked with capturing the majestic yet ethereal nature of the Merfolk civilization on Ixalan. Her design focuses on the creature's graceful movement, balancing the fluid biology of a water-dwelling being with the visual language of flight. Upon its release, the card was received as a reliable, if modest, staple within the set's aquatic-themed archetypes, appreciated by players for its straightforward role in stabilizing board states during matches.
