Where it came from
Winternight Stories was released as part of the Tarkir: Dragonstorm promotional set, designed to commemorate the conclusion of the Khans of Tarkir block. It served as a thematic bridge, weaving together the divergent timelines of the plane's history where dragons became the dominant force. The card was distributed through organized play events, intended to reward players for their participation in local competitive communities during the set's peak relevance.
The visual design and illustration for this card were commissioned to emphasize the ethereal, storytelling nature of the Tarkir setting. Artists aimed for a style that balanced the brutal reality of the plane's warring factions with the mythic weight of its dragon-led history. The artwork was generally received well by the player base for its atmospheric qualities, fitting into the aesthetic evolution of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game during that period.
