Where it came from
Winternight Stories was released as a promotional card for the Magic: The Gathering set Tarkir: Dragonstorm. This set was designed to evoke the high-fantasy themes of the Tarkir plane, specifically focusing on the alternate timeline where dragons dominate the world. The card art was created to capture a moment of quiet reflection amidst the tumultuous conflicts of the set, emphasizing the storytelling traditions within the dragon-lord cultures.
The design process for the Tarkir: Dragonstorm promos aimed to provide players with visually distinct versions of cards that emphasized the aesthetic shift toward draconic themes. Illustrators were tasked with blending traditional fantasy motifs with the specific, jagged landscape architecture of Tarkir. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players and collectors for its evocative artwork, which offered a slower, more narrative pace compared to the high-intensity combat focus of the main set.
