Provenance

Where it came from

Wirewood Hivemaster was released in 2003 as part of the Legions set, an innovative expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was unique in that every card contained within it was a creature, a thematic decision designed to shift the focus of gameplay toward combat and board presence. This particular card was created to support the Elf tribal archetype, providing players with additional insect tokens whenever another elf entered the battlefield under their control.

The card features artwork by Christopher Moeller, who captured the insectoid, forest-dwelling aesthetic of the Wirewood sanctuary. Moeller, a prolific illustrator for the game during this era, focused on portraying the symbiotic relationship between the Hivemaster and its brood. Upon release, the card was well-received by players building Elf-themed decks in the Onslaught block environment, where it became a cornerstone for creating an overwhelming numerical advantage on the board.
