Provenance

Where it came from

The Wirewood Symbiote was originally introduced in the Onslaught expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 2002. It was designed as part of the Elf creature subtype synergy, reflecting the symbiotic relationship between the elves of the Wirewood forest and the insects that inhabited it. Mechanically, the card was built to reward players for manipulating creature battlefield states, specifically by untapping creatures and returning elves to hand to trigger 'enters the battlefield' effects.

The Eternal Masters printing, released in 2016, features new artwork by Johann Bodin. This version was part of a supplemental set curated specifically for the Limited and Vintage drafting environments, aiming to bring high-demand cards back into circulation. Bodin's interpretation updated the creature's aesthetic for a modern audience, emphasizing the organic, interlocking nature of the symbiote and its host, which was well-received by players looking for refreshed visuals on staple utility cards.
