Where it came from
Wisedrafter's Will was released in 2024 as part of the Mystery Booster 2 set, a curated compilation designed by Wizards of the Coast to celebrate the history and play patterns of Magic: The Gathering. As a 'playtest' card, it features the distinctive gray-bordered aesthetic associated with prototype designs, intended to evoke the feeling of early-stage development and experimental game mechanics. The card was conceptualized by the game's design team to offer a unique, drafting-focused utility that fits within the chaotic, high-variance environment of a mystery booster draft.
The design intent behind this card centers on the meta-game of drafting, specifically rewarding players for their navigation of card selection throughout a session. By referencing the 'wisedrafter' archetype, the developers aimed to inject a sense of humor and self-awareness into the play experience. Upon its release, it was well-received by the community as a quintessential 'un-set' style card that leans into the unconventional nature of the product, serving as both a functional game piece and a collectible novelty for those who enjoy the lighter side of the card game's design evolution.
