Witherbloom Apprentice was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a student of the Witherbloom College, one of the five magical institutions on the plane of Arcavios, which focuses on the intersection of life and death, often utilizing biology and pest-magic. The set was designed to explore the flavor of a multiversal university, categorizing the five colleges into distinct two-color identities.

The card was illustrated by Josh Hass, who leaned into the dark, earthy aesthetic associated with the Witherbloom house. Hass rendered the apprentice with organic, swamp-aligned motifs that emphasize the college's focus on the cycle of decay and regrowth. Upon its release, the card saw immediate competitive interest in constructed formats, particularly for its ability to drain opponents' life totals through its magecraft triggered ability whenever a player casts or copies an instant or sorcery spell.
