Where it came from
The Spell Satchel was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to represent the academic atmosphere of Strixhaven University, an institution modeled after prestigious collegiate environments. It serves as an artifact card that emphasizes the theme of magical resource management, reflecting the school's focus on structured spellcasting and arcane study.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Caio Monteiro, who sought to capture the aesthetic of an essential student accessory within a fantasy setting. The visual design highlights the practical utility of a mage's traveling bag, filled with scrolls and magical implements, intended to feel grounded within the whimsical yet scholarly tone of the set. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, lore-appropriate inclusion that helped define the set's tactile approach to wizarding culture.
