Where it came from
Witherbloom, the Balancer was released as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages promotional set in 2021. Designed for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, the card represents the Witherbloom college, one of the five magical institutions on the plane of Arcavios. The card was created to emphasize the college's core philosophy of balancing life and death, reflecting the aesthetic of a gothic-inspired magical academy.
The artwork for this specific promo version was crafted to evoke a sense of deep, overgrown nature mingled with dark, necromantic themes. Illustrators for the Strixhaven set sought to differentiate the five colleges through distinct color palettes and motifs, with Witherbloom utilizing dark greens and earthy tones to signify its focus on biology and decay. Upon release, the card was received as a versatile tool for gameplay, praised by players for its unique ability to disrupt board states while adhering to the thematic identity of the Golgari-aligned institution.
