Withered Wretch

Withered Wretch was released in 2003 as part of the Legions expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a set, Legions was unique for being the first Magic expansion to consist entirely of creature cards, a design choice intended to emphasize the tribal conflict and massive battles central to the Onslaught block's narrative. The card itself represents a shift toward graveyard-focused mechanics, serving as a tactical tool to disrupt strategies that relied on recursion.

The illustration was created by artist Carl Critchlow, whose distinct, painterly style is well-regarded within the game's history. Critchlow was tasked with depicting a creature that embodied rot and decay, resulting in the skeletal, hunched figure that has become iconic for its unsettling aesthetic. Upon its release, the card was received favorably by players for its efficient, repeatable ability to exile cards from graveyards, making it a staple sideboard option in various competitive formats during its time in rotation.
