What it does

Wolfgang Eder introduced this black-red "Goblin Bidding" deck to the world at this year's European Championships. The twenty-two-year-old student from Weinheim, Germany, says the inspiration for the deck came from trying to give the typical Goblin tribe something to do in the midgame. He achieved this by adding black to the deck for Patriarch's Bidding, which brings every Goblin in the graveyard back to play. And with cards like Goblin Warchief and Siege-Gang Commander, those Goblins have haste and bring friends with them! A resolved Patriarch's Bidding is usually game over.

Provenance

Where it came from

The 2003 World Championship Decks were released by Wizards of the Coast to commemorate the Magic: The Gathering World Championships held in Berlin. This deck, known as 'Eder's Tog,' was a replica of the deck used by Wolfgang Eder, who reached the top eight of the tournament. The set was designed to allow players to experience competitive-level strategies by providing exact, non-tournament-legal reprints of the successful decks used by the world's best players that year.

The deck centers on the 'Psychatog' archetype, which was highly dominant in the competitive environment of the time. The card back features a gold-border design to distinguish these cards from standard game pieces, reflecting their status as collector's items intended for casual play rather than tournament use. Wolfgang Eder’s list is widely regarded as a definitive representation of the complex control-based gameplay prevalent in 2003, with the cards chosen specifically for their synergy in high-stakes play.
