Where it came from
Woodfall Primus was first released in the Shadowmoor set in 2008 and later featured as a card in the 2015 Modern Masters set, where it bore the collector number 174. The card was designed to embody the mechanics of the Shadowmoor block, specifically utilizing the persist keyword, which allows a creature to return to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter after it dies. This design choice highlights the gritty, cycle-of-life thematic elements that characterized the expansion's artistic direction.
The artwork for Woodfall Primus was provided by Jaime Jones, who sought to capture the towering, imposing nature of a treefolk entity. The illustration emphasizes the character's mossy, arboreal texture, grounding it within the fantasy setting of the plane of Shadowmoor. Upon release, the card became a staple in various green-based deck strategies, earning a reputation among players for its resilience and its ability to act as a powerful utility creature in both casual and competitive formats.
