Where it came from
Woodfall Primus was originally introduced in the Shadowmoor set in 2008, designed as a powerful creature featuring the persist keyword. This mechanic allows a creature to return to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter after it dies, reflecting the thematic cycle of decay and rebirth inherent to the Shadowmoor plane.
The version from Ultimate Masters, released in 2018, features updated artwork by artist Nils Hamm. This printing was part of a premium set designed to showcase iconic and high-utility cards, and Hamm’s illustration highlights the creature’s earthy, monstrous nature, maintaining the card's reputation as a cornerstone in green-based ramp and combo strategies.
