Where it came from
Woodland Cemetery was released as part of the Secret Lair Drop Series, a specialized line of Magic: The Gathering products introduced by Wizards of the Coast in 2019. These sets often feature curated themes, exclusive artwork, and experimental aesthetic directions not typically found in standard booster packs. This particular version of the card was designed to highlight the game's ongoing collaboration with diverse artistic voices, moving away from traditional fantasy tropes to embrace more stylized, evocative imagery.
The illustration for this card was created by the artist Dom Qwek, whose work is characterized by intricate line work and a focus on mood and atmosphere. In designing this piece, the objective was to provide a fresh visual interpretation of a classic land card, emphasizing the somber and overgrown aesthetic inherent to the 'Woodland' concept. Upon its release, it was well-received by collectors who prioritize unique card aesthetics and those who appreciate the integration of refined, contemporary illustration styles within the established lore of the game.
