Where it came from
Wretched Gryff was released in 2016 as part of the Eldritch Moon expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the gothic horror-inspired plane of Innistrad, the expansion depicts the world’s descent into madness caused by the arrival of the cosmic entity Emrakul. The card represents the set's central transformation mechanic, where familiar creatures are mutated into grotesque, tentacled horrors, reflecting the set's core theme of existential dread and corruption.
The creature was illustrated by Nils Hamm, a frequent contributor to the game known for his painterly, atmospheric style. Hamm designed the gryff to evoke a sense of tragic distortion, juxtaposing the noble, avian qualities of the original creature with the visceral, alien textures imposed by the influence of the Eldrazi. Upon its release, the card was widely utilized in Limited formats for its ability to provide card advantage through its emerge cost, cementing its status as a functional staple within the Eldritch Moon environment.
