Where it came from
Contingency Plan was released in 2016 as part of the Eldritch Moon expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the corrupting influence of the Eldrazi titan Emrakul upon the gothic horror-themed plane of Innistrad. This card, a blue sorcery, represents the desperate efforts of the plane's inhabitants to organize a defense against an existential, cosmic threat, fitting squarely into the set's narrative of encroaching madness and systematic collapse.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Chase Stone, who captured the scene of Jace Beleren and Tamiyo consulting scrolls amidst a chaotic, rapidly deteriorating battlefield. The design intent was to emphasize the theme of strategic planning in the face of inevitable devastation. Upon release, it was received as a functional utility card within the set, appreciated by players for its ability to manipulate the top of the library, effectively mirroring the desperate, calculated search for a solution depicted in the illustration.
