Provenance

Where it came from

Contingency Plan was released in July 2016 as part of the Eldritch Moon set, the second expansion in the Shadows over Innistrad block for Magic: The Gathering. Set in the gothic horror-inspired world of Innistrad, the card reflects the desperate atmosphere of the plane as its inhabitants struggle against the corrupting influence of the eldritch entity Emrakul. Mechanically, the card was designed to allow players to manipulate their library, a common blue-aligned tactic intended to represent careful tactical preparation in the face of overwhelming cosmic threats.

The artwork was provided by Ryan Yee, a long-time contributor to the game known for his expressive character designs. Yee utilized a muted, ominous palette to capture the card's theme of meticulous, albeit frantic, strategic foresight. Within the game's competitive landscape, the card was received as a functional utility tool, prized by limited-format players for its ability to smooth out draws and filter through deck resources during the high-stakes environment of the set's draft meta.
