Provenance

Where it came from

The Wurm token was released as part of the Scars of Mirrodin expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game in 2010. This set marked a thematic return to the metallic plane of Mirrodin, where biological life was being slowly corrupted by the invasive, artificial Phyrexian oil. As tokens are not part of the standard main deck construction, this card was printed to represent a creature summoned into play by specific spells or abilities, such as those found on cards like Primeval Titan or various other creature-generating effects within that block.

The artwork, illustrated by Volkan Baga, captures the biomechanical aesthetic central to the set's visual identity. Baga’s design leans into the theme of the 'Scars,' depicting a creature that bridges the gap between organic monstrosity and the cold, interconnected metal landscape of the world. The token was received by players as a functional and highly thematic component of the game's mechanics, serving as a visceral visual reminder of the set’s focus on growth and environmental transformation.
