Wurmcoil Engine

Wurmcoil Engine was originally introduced in the 2010 Scars of Mirrodin set, conceptualized as a powerful artifact creature representing the corruption of the plane of Mirrodin by the Phyrexians. Its design, characterized by the split nature of its death trigger that leaves behind two smaller tokens, was intended to provide resilient value in midrange and control archetypes, quickly becoming a staple in multiple formats for its ability to stabilize the board against aggressive opponents.

The Double Masters 308 printing serves as a premium aesthetic showcase for the card, utilizing the 'borderless' treatment popularized in later sets to emphasize its mechanical dominance. Illustrated by Raymond Swanland, the artwork leans into his signature high-contrast, kinetic style, capturing the creature's jagged, metallic form in mid-motion. The release was well-received by the player base, largely because it provided a visually striking and highly playable version of a format-defining classic during a set focused on reintroducing powerful staples to the game.
