Where it came from
The Wurmcoil Engine, originally debuting in the 2010 Scars of Mirrodin set, stands as one of the most iconic artifact creatures in Magic: The Gathering history. This specific Secret Lair iteration, numbered 1661, emerged from the 'Secret Lair x Street Fighter' drop released in 2022. The card was reimagined to feature the art of Lius Lasahido, depicting the character Blanka, a fan-favorite fighter from Capcom's legendary gaming franchise, rather than the traditional Phyrexian construct.
The design integration reflects Wizards of the Coast's strategy of merging beloved pop-culture intellectual properties with mechanically distinct game pieces. By casting Blanka as the Wurmcoil Engine, the designers maintained the card's characteristic split-death trigger—where it fragments into smaller creatures—to mirror the chaotic, aggressive combat style associated with the Street Fighter character. The card was received as a bridge between nostalgia-heavy gaming communities, appealing both to competitive players who value the card's high power level and collectors drawn to the crossover aesthetic.
