Where it came from
Wyll's Reversal was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion for the trading card game Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed to integrate the lore and characters of Dungeons & Dragons into the mechanics of the Commander format, specifically utilizing the 'Choose a Background' mechanic to reflect character customization. The card represents the titular character Wyll, a prominent Warlock from the Dungeons & Dragons universe, as he appears in the Baldur's Gate 3 narrative arc.
The card was illustrated by David Auden Nash, who employed a dynamic, high-fantasy style consistent with the visual aesthetic established by Wizards of the Coast for the Baldur's Gate crossover. The design focuses on the chaotic and reactive nature of Wyll's combat abilities, functioning as a 'redirection' spell that allows players to turn an opponent's advantage against them. Upon release, it was well-received by players for its thematic resonance with the source material and its utility in multiplayer games.
