Where it came from
Xander's Pact was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna Commander set, a collection themed around a 1920s-inspired, Art Deco metropolis controlled by demon-led crime families. The card is mechanically tied to the Maestro faction, a group of vampire artisans and assassins who value artistic elegance and lethal precision. Its design reflects this flavor, emphasizing the high-stakes, ritualistic nature of contracts within the city's criminal underworld.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who utilized a stylistic approach common to the set's high-fashion, mob-boss aesthetic. By employing a 'modal' design, the card allows players to choose from multiple distinct effects, mirroring the versatile and often manipulative nature of the Maestros. Upon release, it was noted by players for its thematic resonance and its ability to scale in power based on the number of opponents, making it a distinct utility piece in multiplayer Commander environments.
