Where it came from
Xathrid Necromancer was originally printed in the Magic: The Gathering core set Magic 2014 and later featured in the Commander 2020 product line. As a Human Wizard with an ability that creates Zombie tokens whenever a Human creature dies, the card was designed to support tribal-focused decks, rewarding players for maintaining a high density of Human creatures on the battlefield.
The artwork for this iteration, illustrated by Johannes Voss, emphasizes the necromantic themes of the Innistrad plane, where the card first debuted. Voss utilized a dark, atmospheric palette to depict the necromancer wielding skeletal magic, a visual style that has been well-received by fans for its cohesion with the gothic horror aesthetic characteristic of the setting.
