Where it came from
Surly Badgersaur was released in 2020 as part of the Commander 2020 set, specifically within the Timeless Wisdom deck. This set was designed to support the Commander format, a multiplayer variant of Magic: The Gathering, by introducing cards focused on synergy, cycle mechanics, and graveyard interaction. The design team created this card to function as a versatile engine for players utilizing discard outlets, allowing them to turn discarded cards into tactical advantages by placing +1/+1 counters on the creature.
The card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, who depicted the creature with a distinctively aggressive posture that reflects its namesake. The artwork emphasizes the rugged, dangerous nature of the beast, fitting the high-fantasy aesthetic of the game. Upon release, it was well-received by the Commander community as a reliable utility card, particularly for decks built around themes of hand manipulation and value generation, cementing its place as a staple in green-based synergistic strategies.
