Where it came from
Xolatoyac, the Smiling Flood was released in 2023 as part of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan Commander expansion, a set designed to immerse players in the subterranean, Mesoamerican-inspired landscape of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. The card depicts a central deity of the River Heralds, reflecting the set’s focus on the deep-time evolution and elemental manifestations found within the hidden core of Ixalan. It serves as a mechanical anchor for decks utilizing the set’s unique explore and land-synergy mechanics.
The artwork, created by illustrator Ekaterina Burmak, portrays the entity with a striking, monolithic design that balances the serene aesthetic of the merfolk civilization with the raw, watery power of a flood deity. Burmak’s work on this piece was intended to capture a sense of ancient, benevolent yet overwhelming scale. Upon its release, the card was received positively by the Commander community for its specialized ability to manipulate the flow of resources and its thematic cohesion with the broader Ixalan lore.
