Yoke of the Damned

Yoke of the Damned was released in 2009 as part of the Conflux expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. As the second set in the Shards of Alara block, Conflux focused on the collision of the five shards of Alara, a plane that had been magically fractured for millennia. The card was designed as an uncommon artifact representing a grim piece of equipment that punishes creatures whenever a creature dies, fitting the set's mechanical emphasis on graveyard interactions and the sacrifice-oriented themes of the Grixis shard.

The card features artwork by the illustrator Volkan Baga. Baga, a prolific artist in the Magic: The Gathering universe, opted for a stark, ominous visual style to convey the item's morbid function. The illustration depicts the heavy, iron-like yoke designed to bind and oppress, effectively capturing the dark aesthetic prevalent in the set's gothic-inspired regions. Upon release, the card was viewed as a niche utility piece for limited formats, appreciated by players for its ability to generate incremental value in decks designed to cycle through sacrificial fodder.
