Where it came from
You Meet in a Tavern was released in 2021 as part of the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms set, a landmark collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and the Dungeons & Dragons brand. Designed to bridge the gap between tabletop roleplaying and competitive card play, the card captures the classic 'tavern start' trope common in D&D campaigns, offering players a choice between searching for creatures or providing a defensive buff to their party.
The artwork was illustrated by David Auden Nash, who utilized a warm, atmospheric style to evoke the quintessential fantasy inn setting. The design reflects the set's broader goal of incorporating D&D mechanics, such as choice-based outcomes, into the Magic: The Gathering ruleset. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for its thematic flavor and versatile utility in Commander and limited formats.
