Where it came from
Zaffai, Thunder Conductor, was introduced in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Secrets of Strixhaven, a expansion themed around a magical university. Designed as a legendary creature for the Commander format, the card captures the archetype of a prismari mage who uses elemental magic to conduct storms. The artwork by Magali Villeneuve emphasizes the character's dynamic connection to elemental forces, showcasing her signature style of dramatic lighting and fluid motion.
The character represents the Prismari college, which combines blue and red mana to blend artistry with raw destruction. During the set's release, Zaffai was specifically crafted to support 'big spell' strategies, rewarding players for casting expensive sorceries and instants. The design received positive feedback from the community for its thematic synergy, effectively translating the flavor of a tempestuous conductor into a functional, cohesive gameplay experience.
