Where it came from
Zaffai and the Tempests was released in 2021 as part of the Secrets of Strixhaven Art Series, a collection of cards dedicated to the visual aesthetics of the Magic: The Gathering set centered on an elite magical university. This specific card represents one of the five colleges, Prismari, which focuses on artistic expression and elemental chaos. The series was designed to showcase the intricate illustrations commissioned for the game, featuring the original card art on the front with the artist's signature embossed in foil on the lower portion.
The artwork for this piece was created by artist Mathias Kollros, who sought to capture the dynamic and grandiose nature of Zaffai, a high-ranking Prismari mage. The design emphasizes the visual fusion of storm energy and artistic performance, reflecting the college's philosophy of creation through power. Upon its release, the Art Series was well-received by collectors who value the opportunity to view the game's illustrations in a larger, borderless format without the standard gameplay text overlays.
